Internet Advertising And The Future Of Blogs

As many of you know there is a new kid on the block when it comes to news. Blogger News Network has come on the scene and is doing quite well for itself. In a short period of time they are beginning to be recognized as a real news source. Several forums use them as a news reference, including The Democratic Underground. They even have even been used as a source in Wikipedia.

Quite possibly their best accomplishment was their overall Google News dominance on the Jennifer Wilbanks story. Truly they have been making a showing for a small independent news agency. To those looking at dollar signs they are a very wise investment.

For a group that has had no television or radio exposure they have consistently attracted over 150,000 hits per month since being included in Goggle News. Why then are they starving for advertisers? If you take note of the front page they are selling ad space for as little as one dollar. To be more correct, the bidding starts at one dollar. They have taken to selling web space on ebay. With an average click rate of 1-5% that would equate to 15-75,000 clicks per month for just a dollar or more.

If you would like to ensure better placement they also have advertising space through Blogads for $50 a month. Still there are no takers. I am no demographics major, but it appears to me that many weblogs are experiencing the same problems. Blogs for Bush have slashed their prices and many others are simply not collecting anything for ad space that was previously selling for hundreds of dollars a month. This may be simply a shift in readership to other sites or it could be something a bit deeper. Only time will tell.

They are not worth it. Blogads work, but not to the degree of paying hundreds of dollars.
